Tied: A Duet

Two zoetrope mechanisms sit side by side installed in a piano bench, each of them projecting a “voice” of words and light onto the music stand.  What appears to be a harmonious duet of cycling lyrics becomes a never-ending series of accusations, admissions, and revelations.  One zoetrope presents verbs (“lying”, “denying”, “guilty”, “blind”) while the other zoetrope names subjects (“I am”, “You are”, “We are”). As they rotate, the randomized phrases created from their overlap varies from confessions to arguments.

Mixed media: piano bench, player piano music roll, music stand, motor, light, lens, mirrors, photographic transparencies.  ~40 × 40 × 30 inches.
