Holding Pattern

Mixed media: child’s chair on wood stool, picture frame, motor, light, lens, mirrors, tin can, film, wood, velvet, approx. 48 × 36 × 36 inches.

A small, wooden children’s chair sits precariously on top of an adult stool. The zoetrope mechanism, which is mounted in the children’s chair, projects images of two hands that attempt (and fail) to grab a dangling rope. While the sculptural components describe a child being placed carelessly in an adult position, the images explore the nature of struggling in that in-between space. Like a mirror, the picture frame on the wall contains and reflects this struggle.
